How to Override Layouts Per Category Using Nova
By default, Aurora’s archive settings in the Customizer apply to every category, tag, and other archive on your site. Nova adds an override panel to the category and tag edit screens that lets you set different layout values for individual terms without changing the global defaults.
Requirements
The Nova plugin must be installed and active. See Introduction to Nova for details.
How to Set a Per-Category Override
- Go to Posts → Categories (or Posts → Tags).
- Click Edit on the category or tag you want to override.
- Scroll down to find the Nova Layout Overrides section.
- Set your overrides using the dropdowns and fields.
- Click Update.
The indicator dot next to the Nova Overrides heading shows whether any override is active on this term. A green dot means at least one setting is overriding the global default.
Available Overrides
| Setting | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Archive template | The archive layout used for this category or tag only |
| Masonry | Enable or disable masonry for this term regardless of the global setting |
| Posts per page | How many posts appear per page or load on this term’s archive |
| Sidebar | Show or hide the sidebar on this term’s archive |
| Archive banner | Set the banner style for this term: Classy, Minimal, or None, overriding the global setting |
| Banner image | A custom background image for the Classy banner on this term’s archive. Only applies when banner type is set to Classy. |
| Load more style | Pagination or Load More button for this term only |
| Header template | The header layout used on this term’s archive only |
| Footer template | The footer layout used on this term’s archive only |
Clearing an Override
To remove an override and return a setting to the global default, set the dropdown back to Global default and click Update. The setting will inherit from the Customizer again.
Author Page Overrides
Nova also adds overrides to individual author profiles. From each user’s edit screen you can set a different author layout, archive template, masonry preference, posts per page, sidebar visibility, and load more style, all scoped to that author only. See How to Override Layouts Per Author for the full walkthrough.
The global archive settings, layout, posts per page, and load more style, are configured in the Customizer. See How to Configure Archive Settings for the full reference.
